The Node Nano is plenty good enough for most modest systems and is a worthy competitor to anything in the sub $500 range. Stepping up to the Node Classic, you are getting a larger power supply and HDMI eARC as well as an upgraded THX AAA headphone amplifier. With the Node Classic you also have the ability to add Dirac room correction which can transform the sound of your system. This would be at home in any “better” stereo system where you are wanting to maximize detail and performance squeezing as much juice as possible while still being budget conscious.

The Node Icon is a whole different animal. You are getting a dual ESS ES9039Q2M DAC which will give you better detail, separation and soundstaging, balanced outputs and a more carefully engineered signal path which translates into a sound experience that would normally cost a whole lot more than what you’re going to pay for a Node Icon. The colour display is also a nice touch which will give you the album art and other details on the content that you are listening to.
